Greg Wells, Ph.D. is a scientist specializing in extreme human physiology. His work is focused on elite athletes who are trying to achieve international medal performances, and on children with chronic diseases. Although these seem completely different - the physiology - or the inner workings of the human body - are the same in both situations and the learning from one condition can be applied to benefit the other.
His practice is with the Canadian Sport Centre as an exercise physiologist and Director of Sport Science. Dr. Wells teaches at the University of Toronto, and is a researcher at The Hospital for Sick Children in Physiology and Experimental Medicine and at the Toronto General Hospital Department of Anesthesia.
He received his Doctorate from the University of Toronto Graduate Department of Exercise Sciences and completed a Post Doctoral Fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Respiratory Medicine.
Details:
More specifically, Dr. Wells is currently working as an exercise physiologist and sport scientist to enhance perforamance in international level athletes. He has had the opportunity to work with dozens of athletes who have won medals at Commonwealth Games, World Championships and the Olympic Games with the Canadian Sport Centre in Ontario. He has also served as the Exercise Physiologist for the Royal Canadian Golf Association since 2002.
He is also currently teaching courses in the area of exercise and respiratory physiology as an instructor at University of Toronto’s Department of Physiology (2nd and 3rd year basic and advanced human physiology). Dr. Wells also teaches Canada's elite sport coaches in National Coaching Certification Program (Level 4 & 5) at the Canadian Sport Centre’s National Coaching Institute.
His research is focused on the pathophysiological mechanisms of exercise intolerance in children across a spectrum of chronic diseases - most recently cystic fibrosis and muscle myopathy. His work uses traditional exercise testing and advanced magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy techniques to help elucidate pathophysiologies of disease. He also uses these same techniques and principles to help sport scientists and coaches improve our understanding of elite athletic performance physiology. Studying both chronic disease and elite athletes allows for the investigation of physiological challenges across the entire spectrum of the human condition. Dr. Wells has presented before leading sports and medical organizations around the world, including the International Olympic Committee, International Congress on Child Neurology Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, North American Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the American College of Sports Medicine.
He also belives that to truly understand extreme conditions you should experience them yourself - if possible. To this end Dr. Wells continues to build on his experiences as a former international level competitive swimmer, as a marathon runner (having twice completed the world's toughest marathon 600 miles north of the arctic circle), and during a recently completed 10,500 km Tour D'Afrique bike race (pictures).
