NCCP Courses

NCCP Level 4 and 5 Task 1 - Energy Systems

Thanks for visiting our course page. You will find the lecture videos, downloadable summary articles and cool links. Please email us if you have any content you want to add to this page - links etc...

The course assignment information is available at the bottom of this page.

Lecture 1. Energy Systems

Download the Flip Chart notes from lectures 1-3 here.

In this lecture we present an overview of energy systems that are used by the human body during exercise to produce ATP for muscle contraction. We discuss a new way of looking at energy systems - to help coaches understand that energy comes from aerobic, anaerobic and phosphate systems at the same time depending on intensity. You can watch the video below, and can download the summary article here

Lecture 2. How the human body adapts to training

In this introductory lecture, foundation concepts such as how the body adapts to exercise and training are presented. The genetic foundation of adaptation, for example how protein synthesis happens after strength training, is also reviewed.

Lecture 3. Aerobic endurance training

This lecture provides an overview of aerobic metabolism as it relates to provision of ATP to fuel movement during endurance exercise. The related training topics are for sports like triathlon, marathon, swimming, paddling, and for training the ability to recover quickly between shorter bursts of intense activity. Need a quick review of the cardiovascular system (heart, lungs, blood etc...)? You can read this short article as a refresher.

Lecure 4. Anaerobic Metabolism and Sprint Training

This lecture provides an overview of anerobic (lactate) metabolism as it relates to provision of ATP to fuel movement during high intensity exercise. Key information about training the anaerobic glycolytic / lactate energy system for improved sprint and interval performance are discussed.

Lecure 5. Anaerobic Metabolism and Sprint Training

This lecture provides an overview of high energy phosphagen / alactic metabolism as it relates to provision of ATP to fuel movement during high intensity exercise. Key information about training for explosiveness and power are discussed.

Lecure 6. Sequencing Endurance Training and Sprint Training in the Season Training Plan

Lecure 7. Question and Answer with Coaches - Designing Training Sets to Target a Specific Energy System.

Task 1. Energy Systems Course Assignment.

Coaches will be expected to perform a sport science analysis of their sport and, based on that analysis, develop training recommendations using information from this course (or any other source). Coaches will be expected to design individual projects to best meet their own requirements and personal situation. Contact Dr. Wells discuss your assignment.

Download Assignment here. If you are doing a time motion analysis read this article for more information.

Some examples include:

Curling

Figure skating

Alpine skiing

Cycling
